Unfortunately this is going to be my last time coming here. My braids are most definitely not small more like medium I was charged $300.00. Although s...he worked pretty fast i dint get what I paid for and this is the second time this has happened. My cousin had the same experience. I gave 2 starts because she works at a decent pace and all the Braider’s are friendly. This has been my 3rd visit and honestly I was only satisfied with my 1st visit. I wasted my money they will probably only last me a month. You live and you learn I should have learned my lesson after my 1st unsatisfied service. Update* I have spoken to the shop and we have made arrangements for her to fix my unsatisfied services. She was very apologetic and is making things right to make me feel like a valued customer. Arrived for my confirmed appointment that I booked through Booksy and no one was at the shop for my appointment. I waited for 45 mins and no one arriv...ed. I called and emailed the shop and no one responded. I’m disappointed because people usually book a braiding appointment leading up to an event, special occasion or vacation. So missing a braiding appointment is a real let down. Show more

Two feeding braids with extensions

Zero stars!!! I originally booked my appointment for Sunday and I got a text from the braider (Corretta) on Saturday saying that she wasn’t available ...even though her online schedule shows several open appointments for Sunday and asked if I could come in that day or Monday. I chose Monday. Today, the braider texted me less than an hour before my appointment, asking to postpone it til 2p because she was “running behind”. Even though I was short on time, I agreed to come at 2p to accommodate her. When I arrived on time, she just had a very off-putting energy from the door! She starts talking about my hair is too short for 2 braids (Needless to say, I booked the same style over a week ago with another beautician and she had no trouble braiding my hair). I tell her ‘fine’ and gathered my things to leave all the while thinking what a I waste of time driving 30mins to her shop only to be told she can’t do my hair. She stops me and says “well I can do three braids” (however 2 seconds ago it was “too short to braid”). Long story short, she gave me four braids. They were poorly done with one braid bigger than all the others. All the while she’s braiding my hair, she’s combing my hair very aggressively, braiding way too tight and making sly comments about how difficult it is to braid my hair. Keep in mind, my hair was washed, blowed dried & flat ironed the night before. Then she has the nerve to charge $80. These braids were so tight and poorly done that I took the braids down as soon as I got home. What a scam! This braider had such a nasty and lackadaisical attitude; the worst I’ve dealt with in a long time from another black woman. It’s a shame when you try to support a black-owned business within the community by spending your hard earned money, this is how you get treated. Never again! Despite her vitriol & misplaced hostility, I kept my composure. I pray God does some intensive work on that woman’s spirit! 🙏🏾 Show more

This place is amazing! Best service, atmosphere, and braiding! Friendly, easygoing, no attitude, straightforward.  Everyone who works there, even the ...clientele seems to have a happy spirit! I am so glad I discovered this shop. I am a man who started growing my natural 4C hair a few years ago and got to the place where I realized it would be best for my hair to “keep it stretched” and have protective hairdos from time to time. To be honest, I was slightly nervous about being a guy walking into a shop and asking about something I had limited knowledge about at the time. I tried to book an Appointment at a braid shop a few blocks from home and not only was the atmosphere jaded, but they were rude to me and never returned my phone calls.  Mariam, the owner of Akwaba braids is the opposite of this. Friendly, responsive, and engaging! A great spirit who also finds friendly and skilled staff to round out the professional atmosphere. I don’t always wear my hair in braids (afros, wash n’ go, twist outs, and do it yourself 2 strand twists in-between braiding), but when I do, I can’t think of a better place than Akwaba braids! I did try a different and cheaper place (and Akwaba's prices are very reasonable, but I tried another place because of a closer location as well), but regretted it as the result was far less good-looking (crooked parts, uneven braiding, and frizzy roots in 2-3 days). I was mad!  I am never mad after the many times I've gone to Akwaba Braids!  In fact extremely proud and happy! As I write this, I am about a week and a half Into box braids, that Mariam did for me, and I still look like day one! Although I have had box braids several times, I also loved the 3 times or so, that my hair was corn rowed, the price for that is amazing and the stylist (I think her name is Coretta?) gave me these micro cornrows that seemed to spiral from my edges, that got me so many compliments. Lastly, I gave away my niece at a wedding in Mexico. My box braids, done by the owner herself got me so much positive attention. One of the people I met at the resort in Mexico, who was from Brazil said "I wish I could come to Oakland to get my hair braided like yours!" 🙌🏾❤️‍🔥😉 So, if ya wanna look good, at a great price, and be in a positive environment at a place that is welcoming, clean, and professional, I recommend Akwaba Braids.! Booked and confirmed online appointment but was called immediately and told the time i selected for the appt wasn't available. Rescheduled for a da...y that the braider was available for an appointment. On day of appointment shortly before my visit I was called and asked to come one later. Arrived to shop an hour later per there request (on-time) and wait one and a half hours with out any communication from the braider. I asked how much longer or if they has an ETA and I was told 30 minutes. I then waited an additional hour before just leaving. It is really unfortunate because I was really looking forward to having my hair braided for my birthday. I leave for New York and will not have any other day to get my hair done especially since I moved my date to accommodate them. Communication is everything. I understand when braiding hair it can take a bit of time BUT no communication or apology if unacceptable. I try to support small businesses but it felt like my time was not valued or my business so I cannot recommend them to anyone else no matter how good the work is. Customers should be respected and valued because with out them you would have no business. There are tons of competitors out there and business owners should alway keep that in mind when providing a service. There is tons of room for improvement. Show more

I want to start with overall my braids are nice, neat and the same size. We also got done in a reasonable time for the amount of thickness my hair has..., about 8.5 hrs for small singles. Mamou was very nice and it was a easy going peaceful experience. My only dissatisfactions are I have no parts so trying to wear my hair down the middle or side for work really can’t happen, I showed a picture of parted braids they’d done before started and she Said even though I showed her that picture she didn’t think I wanted that which confused me bc if a client shows you a picture as they’re sitting it’s usually what they want (rather knotless or boxed regular singles I don’t understand why they aren’t parted) and most importantly I have recently noticed that in the middle of my head many of my braids and started off with like the first 1-4 stitches french braided down. I paid $350 for singles and wanted singles, not a braid started with a little French braided because it’s noticeable when trying to do a ponytail or lift them, which for me is the most frustrating part I’ve ran into 4 days later. Also there was no tucking so my own hair stuck out more than I would like but that’s no biggie. These are all things that while frustrating I am still able to wear them for the time I need. I would go back because again my braids are nice and all the same size but I would just make sure to be very clear about having parts, at least one down the front middle or side and if you think you feel French braiding then be sure to double check that. Other than that her work is nice and she is sweet. Show more
